Xerosis: Dry skin is usually diagnosed in older adults with itching in the absence of a skin eruption or rash. It is more common in the winter time, especially if the home is heated, resulting in low indoor relative humidity. Therapy usually involves use of skin moisturizers that maintain hydration of the skin. Use mild soaps. Avoid long, hot showers and aggressive scrubbing/drying. A humidifier may help.
