On its way down?: Beta-hcg (what we test for in urine/blood) is often known as hormone of pregnancy. Depending how far along you were with the pregnancy and when you had the "abortion." for example, your level is 12000 now and you had the abortion only 2-3 days ago, maybe it was 24000-30000 then. So, a repeat will tell if it is on a decline. If higher, look for pregnancy again.. Good luck.
