No: Infants born to mother tests positive to hepatitis b receive Hepatitis B Immune Globulin and Hepatitis B Vaccine within 12 hours from birth. Two more doses of hep-b vaccine are typically given at 2- and 6 months of age. These infants are tested at 9 to 18 months for anti- hepatitis b surface antigen and hepatitis b surface antigen to confirm the protection provided through vaccination.

Yes ......... !: Hepatitis b is transmitted mainly during delivery, breast milk can also transmit. Active immunization of newborn with hep-b within 24 hr of birth along with hbig and follow up hep b should permit the mother to nurse. If a nursing mother acquires hep b, infant should receive accelerated protocol with doses at birth and at 1 and 2 mo. Both the infant and mother's current status needs evaluation now.

That Depends: If the mother is infected with Hepatitis B the infant should be administered both Hepatitis B immune Globin and the Hepatitis B vaccine within 12 hours of being born. Hepatitis B vaccine is administered again between 1 to 2 months old and at 6 months. If this has occurred, it would be safe to breastfeed.
