Other options: Wisdom tooth removal can be performed with local anesthesia alone for many patients. Sedation techniques are offered and provided for patients as a more comfortable option, with varying levels of sedation that range from nitrous oxide (laughing gas), IV conscious sedation or general anesthesia. Your doctor can discuss the surgery and anesthesia options available for you and address your concerns.

Your choice: It is normally your decision on whether or not to be put "asleep" to have wisdom teeth out. The risks are there but really rare and not knowing what is going on and waking up and the procedure is complete is a nice bonus. True, you may not be too functional for awhile and need to not eat 6 hours before and have to have a ride there and home. I feel it is better to get all the teeth out at once.
