NPO after midnight: In general terms, if you are having an elective appendectomy tomorrow morning, you should stop eating or drinking after midnight. Most of the time, an appendectomy is an urgent procedure performed for acute appendicitis, and the bowel is not working very well; in that case, you should be npo from when the diagnosis is made until some point postoperatively.
