When can you stop treatment if terminal cancer?

Patient In-Charge: It is never an easy decision to stop cancer treatment, for patient and doctor both. However, at any time that a patient decides to stop care, it is entirely within their rights to do so. Hopefully, their doctor has already discussed this option well before this day arrives and has requested a hospice evaluation. While we may not cure all cancers, we have a lot to offer for comfort care.

Your decision: It is always up to the patient when to take therapies or stop treatments for cancer or any illness. It is something you can discuss with your oncologist. Things to take into consideration are available treatments, potential benefits, risks, side effects and quality of life.

Personal matter: When to stop aggressive treatment for terminal cancer is a personal decision to made in consultation with your family and doctor. However, there are other treatments, e.g., hospice, that improve a person's well being, control pain and provide comfort. So, the question is when to stop aggressive treatment, but there is no reason to stop care, including medical care even in terminal state.
