A 34-year-old female asked:

can an anxiety attack cause you to cough to the point that you are gasping for air? symptoms are, rapid heart beat, difficulty breathing.

Yes it can: Yes, anxiety attacks can make you gasp for air ; have rapid pulse. However, you also need a medical evaluation for these issues since asthma and other causes can result in similar outcomes. Panic attacks can cause all kinds of physical symptoms -- but please don't jump to that explanation without complete workup. If it's indeed anxiety, please know there are excellent treatments!

Lack of blood flow: A ventilation perfusion scan is a test for a blood clot in the lungs, or pulmonary embolism. If there is a blood clot, an area of the lung will not be perfused, but will be ventilated, and therefore a mismatch will be seen.

A 36-year-old member asked:

Can a collapsed lung lead to a heart attack in someone with a family history of heart problems?

2 doctor answers2 doctors weighed in
Dr. Robert Kwok
Pediatrics 33 years experience
Yes: A "large" collapsed lung, especially one where the leaked air is pushing on the lung and heart (tension pneumothorax), is an emergency regardless of any family history of heart problems. A heart attack occurs when heart muscle can't get enough oxygen, such as when blood flow to the heart is blocked or when the blood oxygen is way too low. A big pneumothorax can block both blood flow and air flow.
