Benzodiazepines: Benzodiazepines do not directly reduce norepinephrine release, but they do enhance the inhibitory gaba-a receptor function in the brain so that nerve cells downstream will be less active -- including norepinephrine-firing ones. The end effect is sedation, emotional calming, decreased muscle tone and coordination, decreased memory function, and a host of other changes.
