Normal sugar levels: For children and non-pregnant adults, normal blood sugar (glucose) level is considered <100 mg/dl in fasting morning state, and <140 mg/dl after a meal. Anything above these levels is considered either pre-diabetes (fasting 100-125, post-meal 140-199) or diabetes mellitus (fasting >=126, post-meal >=200 mg/dl). Low blood sugar varies depending on person, but typically is considered <60-70 mg/dl.

It Depends: A normal fasting blood sugar is ranges between 65-99 mg/dl. 2-hours following a meal a normal blood sugar is less than 140 mg/dl. These are based on lab glucose values. A home glucometer may be off some.

Hi & Low Blood Sugar: A low blood sugar is normally less than 65 mg/dl, though some may have symptoms before that point. Elevated blood sugars are >99 fasting or >139 around 2 hr after eating. Diabetes range is >125 fasting or >199 at 2 hr after eating. Some would say that > 199 before 2 hr is in the diabetes range.

How to know if I have low or high blood sugar?

Low blood sugar: The average for blood sugar (glucose) is 80 on the low end to 120 on the high end. The only way to know your number is to check it in a clinic or with a handheld glucometer. The one problem with a random blood sugar is that your blood sugar will fluctuate throughout the day, lower before meals, higher after meals, etc. One test that can help avoid this is called HcA1C which gives an "average".

Symptoms of hi sugar: Symptoms of high blood sugar classically include frequent and much urination and constant thirst. Fatigue and weight loss may also be seen if blood sugars have been high enough for long enough to be considered diabetes. For mild-moderate elevations in blood sugar, no symptoms may be noted as well.

Call your doctor: If you haven't been diagnosed with diabetes, elevated blood sugars could mean that you need treatment for this condition. If you've already been diagnosed, high blood sugars indicate poor control, and may require a medication adjustment or diet changes. Either way, your doctor can do testing and give advice about what your next step should be.
