Great question....: I would say one of the most important advances involve the discovery of the different molecular mechanisms that make cancer develop and grow which led to development of drugs with better effect and less toxicity than traditional chemo. A good example is imatinib for cml. CML used to be a death sentence within 5 years and now it can be all but cured with this drug.

Huge field: Worth remembering -- (1) the greatest public benefits have been in prevention and early detection; (2) all the breakthroughs today are through biotech, which people used to attack as viciously as they now do biotech in agriculture; (3) cancer is 1000s of diseases and there will be no single "cure"; (4) cancer's destabilized genome enables it to evolve resistance to treatments.
