Don't Wait Too Long: This is a very personal discussion that has to occur between you and your doctor. However, ssd benefits are determined by the amount you paid into ss in the recent few years. So don't wait to apply after having been unemployed for 5 years. Ssi is a small amount of money that is given even if you did not contribute.
