Yes: Painful problem! why the diuretic at all? If for bp. Control weight, exercize , and other BP meds may resolve.

Gout: Even as a vegetarian , there can be food induced gout. Legumes can cause gouty attacks , too. Go to a gout website for a full list of foods that cause gout - there are many. I agree with exercise helping the BP and perhaps not needing the hctz (hydrochlorothiazide). Work on that with your doctor, though ! good luck.

Uric acid: Kidney impairment and diuretic meds are common causes. Diet can aggravate. So avoid alcohol, organ meats and shellfish. Avoid high fructose corn syrup containing drinks and foods. Add egg whites, quinoa, soy as protein. Eat lots of fruit and veggies. Drink 3 liters per day. Tart cherry juice daily can help. There is no diuretic that will not elevate uric acid.
