Determine cause: By determining the cause of coughing spasms, a specific treatment can be used. Cough suppressants should be avoided as they may slightly "cover up" symptoms not treat the underlying reason. A cough specialist (allergist or pulmonologist) can assist in finding the reason through an exam, x-ray, lung function tests and perhaps blood tests.
