Get checked out now: Sudden swelling would make me think infection or inflammation. My recommendation is that you get seen at an urgent care or emergency room, where exam and lab studies could be done and threat to airway can be assessed. Pharyngitis (strep throat) is common, but tonsillar absess, angioedema, epiglottitis and other are conditions that need to be ruled out and need urgent treatment.
