Best: TIME: Though i routinely prescribe nsaids to control pain from canker sores during the 3-5 days that they are uncomfortable. In rare cases, called "major aphthae" i will prescribe a short course of oral corticosteroid--especially if the lesion/s interfere with swallowing or speech. If on other areas, can be cauterized with a laser or chemicals. If Ibuprofen doesn't cut it, call your dentist for help.

Canker sores - a nuisance and often painful, they usually heal in six days. In my clinical experience they heal more quickly if you traumatize them with a toothbrush directly until they bleed.
