Hiv is the infection. Everyone who has aids had HIV infection. Aids is a epidemiological definition. It means that the person is at risk of developing complications associated with opportunistic infections from having the HIV infection within. Most call it aids when and individual has HIV and the CD4 cell count is.

No longer should any human get aids. But, that would be in an ideal world. Aids was a diagnosis that represented full immune collapse and thus diagnosed the patient of being at risk of deadly opportunistic infections. It was set at a cut off of CD4 cells of 200 or less. The goal today is to never let an HIV positive individual get a weakened immune system that is this broken.
