Indeed a puzzle: Hives are extremely irritating. When they last, and the days turn to weeks and months, they become what we call "chronic" hives (or urticaria, the scientific name). Typically causes for chronic hives are never found. Studies have shown a certain percent are triggered by an over-active immune system. Good news: a new treatment has been approved for chronic hives (Xolair). See allergist for details
