It depends: Hives affect 1 of 5 people at least once in their lives. Hives that are due to a known cause (such as cat or drug) usually last only as long as one encounters them. Hives due to unknown (idiopathic) causes that leave no scar may last from less than 24 hours to years, although they may not be dangerous (but annoying). Hives that stay in the same place for days and leave a scar are more serious.

Unpredictable: Unfortunately this is one of the most difficult if not impossible questions to answer. For hives as a result of a food allergy they should only last a day or 2 as long as the food is not continued. The problem comes in when the underlying source is not clear. Arbitrarily after 6 weeks hives are labeled chronic. The short answer is hives can last minutes to a lifetime.
