Several: Discoloration of the gums or gingiva can be due to melanin, a pigment in the body that produces color in the skin, eyes, etc. Amalgam (silver filling material) can produce an amalgam tattoo when it gets into the gums. Some or the older metals that were used for crowns and bridges can also cause some discoloration of the gums.
