RCT: See: http://en.Wikipedia.Org/wiki/root_canal and http://www.Mouthhealthy.Org/en/az-topics/r/root-canals for basic information. Then ask your dentist if you still have questions about your specific circumstances. Basically, clean out the contents of nerve canal(s), disinfect and fill the canals.

One/two visits: Root canal requires one to two visits, with decay removal, clean out each of the the canals (varies w/each tooth), debride the organic materials, flush, clean, dry and than fill each of the canals with non- reactive filling material-Gutta percha. After the root canal, you will need the access hole filled possibly with a post and the tooth will need a crown to strengthen it. The later adds 2 visits

Root canal treatment: may be done in 1, 2 or more appointments. In cases where the entire root canal system harbors bacteria, multiple visits is an appropriate choice. The temporary filing will help to heal the infection. Best of all, it can save your tooth, restore function and your daily smile!
