Tooth whitening: The strength of the whitening gel is the unknown factor. Too weak and one gets no/poor results. Too strong and one risks pain from irritation of the nerves in the teeth. Furthermore, if they are using an acidic "pre-rinse/condtioner, , that can remove some enamel ( outside of the tooth) making the teeth even more sensitive . See your dentist to discuss your options.

SalonTooth whitening: Whitening should not be done on stained teeth (stains block the whitening agents from being fully effective), decayed teeth, and patients with gum disease. And, should be done with great care if there is recession, root exposure, or sensitivity. Only a dentist can evaluate these issues, and evaluate which strength whitening agent to use. Salons do not utilize dentists.
