Raised welts: Hives are raised welts looking not much different than the immediate reaction from a mosquito bite. They usually go away after a few hours although new lesions may appear elsewhere. Most hives are itchy but often vary in size. Although the cause for hives are often unknown, they can usually be controlled with medication.
