Treating Alcoholism: Yes. Of course. There is the old and popular drug called Antabuse (disulfiram) which can make you sick if you drink. There is also the approach of using the addiction medicine, Naltrexone as a way to diminish cravings.

Many options: Just be straight forward with your doctor but understand that many primary care docs have had very little training in addiction and alcoholism. If it is possible, see someone who has specialized in addiction medicine. There are prescriptions that help including naltrexone, topamax, (topiramate) neurontin, campral, ondansetron. Rehab is a good way to get started in the process too.
