3 areas of arthritis: Tricompartmental means three compartment arthritis. You're knee has three compartments; the medial compartment, the lateral compartment, and the patellofemoral compartment. Therefore all three of these compartments have wear down of the cartilage surfaces which is what osteoarthritis means. Osteophytes are bone spurs growing off the edges of the bone common with osteoarthritis.
