It can be: Everybody may feel sad from time to time, but a clinical depression is a medical disorder. If you are looking for an evaluation, you need to see your physician for a thorough evaluation. Some diseases are "contracted" like infectious diseases, and many others are genetically inherited. Depression is a blend of biological inheritance and psychological losses.

Disease Model: Yes, depression is a disease, affecting several different areas of the brain that control sleep, appetite, energy, concentration as well as emotion. The causes are less clear, but depression is developed over time by those with genetic vulnerability in combination with exposure to life stress. There is no association with any infectious diseases that we are currently aware of.

Depression: Depression is a mental disorder. If it's handed down from generation to generation biologically then it could be seen as a disease. If it is situational then it could be seen as stress-induced. If it happens to occur as a result of trauma than that is understandable, sometimes it can behave like a communicable disease. Simply living with someone with depression can inducedepression in other family members.Depression is therefore many different things.
