A member asked:

For the past month or so, i've been having these random occurrences of what feels like gasp of air/hiccuping. about 2-3 times/day. what is this?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

hiccups: Hiccups happen when your diaphragm, the muscle that separates your chest from your belly. Suddenly contracts. You take in air and then your voice box closes shut--the"hic" sound. Swallowing air (chewing gum) fizzy drinks are likely causes. Try holding your breath for several seconds or stimulate the back of your throat by swallowing a teaspoon of sugar. Most hiccups are harmless.
