Is it normal to have pelvic (around ovaries) discomfort few days b4 period? what causes it? my last pelvic exam was in july. no cysts or issues then.

Very common: Mittelschmerz may be the cause, which is pain with ovulation. If it's predictable, try starting Ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory 2 days before it comes.
