Insist on getting the facts, and if she chooses hospice, you can expect she will be cared for humanely and the most distressing symptoms that attend on this fairly common situation can be managed.

She's dying: The ascites indicates the disease is progressing. This means her liver is failing and no longer doing its job. As time passes she will become jaundiced, she may become more swollen but at the same time look malnourished. As her liver is unable to detoxify things she may become confused. It is possible she will develop pain but we can relieve the pain with medication.
