Infection: Gum disease is caused by bacteria. Many factors exacerbate gum disease, most notably diabetes. It is eminently treatable. With your medical history i would strongly suggest that you ask your dentist for the name of the best periodontist (gum/bone specialist) in your area. A periodontist will work with you and your dentist to bring your gum disease under control.
