Dry socket: It is good that you are already aware of such post-extraction complications. If you were given a post-op instruction, please read well and follow it. Make sure not to spit hard if you rinse your mouth (keep it to minimum for the first couple days), stay on a soft diet, if unsure request a post-extraction exam or check to make sure healing is normal. Losing blood clot leads to dry socket.

No guarantees and: We don't understand completely why some patients get dry sockets ; others don't. Don't smoke, drink through a straw, don't spit out or rinse thoroughly for 24 hours. Some individuals with certain medical problems are more prone to developing dry sockets. The bottom line is: follow directions that your own dentist gives you. The incidence of dry socket is small ; too many people worry unnecessarily.
