Avoid root canals : Very tough question to answer here. If the nerve is dead and infected, options are rct or extract. Dead is dead. If the tooth is just irritated there may be hope the the nerve may settle down and stay alive. I've seen some amazing results with ozone use helping teeth to settle down. You would need a non traditional dentist. You may find many critics and skeptics of ozone.

Root Canal facts: If the nerve (pulp tissue) of your tooth has been damaged then the only options are root canal treatment or extraction. A root canal is certainly better then losing the tooth. Root canal therapy has a bad reputation for being painful that it doesn't deserve. The pain is caused by the problem (damaged pulp tissue). Root canal therapy solves the problem and makes the pain go away.
