Symptoms: Symptoms of environmental allergies are sneezing, nasal congestion, itching, runny nose and frequent eye itch/redness. Symptoms can occur during a particular season, year round or intermittently (pet allergy). Food allergies typical present with hives, itching, abdominal pain, diarrhea, etc. That occurs typically on each exposure to the food.

New Allergies: In most places, tree pollen is the spring allergen and grass pollen is the summer allergen. You may have developed a grass pollen allergy. Your allergist can help you figure this out.

Why do I have allergies now at 36?

New home? New pet?: I developed allergies at 29, a few years after moving to the west coast from back east. Pollens of plants to which i had never been exposed were the cause. Oh, and then 3 cats acquired us. Allergic exposure changes with time. So do nonallergic factors that nudge the immune system towards allergy such as pregnancy, some viral infections & living near busy streets with lots of diesel truck exhaust.

A 34-year-old female asked:

I have allergies all yr long. Does that mean my immune system is extra vigilant to all invaders or does it mean that I am more likely to get sick?

Not all invaders: Your body is indeed hypervigilant but not to all invaders, only to those you are sensitized to. Allergies develop because your body recognizes specific things as foreign and over-reacts to them. If your allergy symptoms involve irritated and swollen nasal tissue, open skin lesions, things like these can make you more prone to infections.
