Kidney infection : Is called pyelonephritis and is different from a bladder infection. A baldder infection or UTI is diagnosed with urine culture whereas to diagnose pyelonephritis a clinician uses physical exam to asses tenderness in back, imaging of kdineys with ultrasound or ct scan and urine culture results etc. No one single test is accurate in determining a kidney infection and this is a clinical diagnosis.

Pyelonephritis: An infection of the kidney (pyelonephritis) results in severe back pain, high fever and nausea/vomiting. Unlike an infection only involving the bladder, the ascension of bacteria into the kidney is a dangerous event. If you have these symptoms it is important to see a doctor and have your urine tested. Untreated pyelonephritis can result in permanent kidney damage, blood infection or shock.
