Heart size: A regular chest x-ray can only show inexactly the size of the heart. It sounds like the cxr suggests the heart is enlarged. Sometimes this is accurate and sometimes the cxr just overestimates the heart size. A better way to evaluate the heart is an echocardiogram, or ultrasound of the heart. This test can very accurately identify the heart size and chamber dimensions.
