Humor a madman: Many people will give you advice, but there are people who are not reasonable. Sadly, parents can have agendas for their children that are not helpful or realistic. They probably won't change. If you can, pretend you love him until you can emancipate or no longer be dependent on him. Please forgive my cynicism -- you may find it's what works best.

Tyrant dad?: Dr. Friedlander has given you some reasonable advice here. Some parents (mothers too) are truly tyrants, and will beat kids for disagreeing with them. If this is the situation with your dad, choose your battles very carefully. There may be areas which mean much more to you than others, in terms of standing up for your emotions or your position. Do not purposefully provoke anyone who's crazy.
