How can they not know the number of babies in women like octamom on ultrasound?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Looking at shadows: An ultrasound is a way to use a sonar probe evaluate a two dimensional field. For multiple pregnancies its like counting potatoes moving around in a sack , only seeing one direction at a time. Unless you can find something distinctive about one of the potatoes, it would be easy to under/over count the total number this way. With 8 not all would be visible @ 1 time.
