Unknown risk then: In the past exceesive weight gain was much more a concern for cosmetic and health reasons during pregnancy. Some women smoked or continued to and took diet pills to control weight gain during pregnancy. It is now confirme, after study, to be dangerous to the baby and long term to the mother. Many doctors always thought so. Now that obesity is a major problem, proper diet and exercise are best.

Ignorance: Denial is not limited to addicts. Physicians have participated in denial. Physicians who smoke or take diet pills might be less likely to see the danger to their pregnant patients.
