A member asked:

Can kidney failure be detected in a urinalysis?

No: Urinalysis looks for protein+blood, sugar, specific gravity, ph. These things may predict kidney damage or kidney disease, but are not sensitive to detect kidney failure. This is nearly always determined with a blood test of your urea and/or creatinine.

This test helps: A very sensitive marker of acute renal failure is the presence of muddy brown casts. This finding, which is only detectable by microscopic examination, is an excellent predictor of acute tubular necrosis.
