My brother is suffering from alcoholism and esophagel varices, will my brother die?

Very serious: If he has had an episode of bleeding from his esophageal varices, his chance of survival for more than a month is less than 50%. He must stop drinking in order for him to have any chance of long-term survival. Please help him get into an alcohol rehab center and follow-up with his GI doctor.

Increased risk.: The combination of alcoholism and esophageal varices does put your brother at increased risk for bleeding and shortened life span. There are many treatments available for the varicose including medication, radio frequency ablation , sclerotherapy and even a procedure called tips. More importantly, your brother will need to control his alcoholism. He should see a GI specialist for an evaluation.
