Does diabetes shorten your life?

Diabetes: Is driving at 150 mph every day shortens your life? I have a patient with diabetes who live to be 81. The issue is that diabetes tends to bring other bad guys to the house (hypertension, kidney disease, obesity, high cholesterol). This is the dream team for shortening your life expectancy. Now the ohio state buckeye basketball team is another story: is a great dream team, go bucks.

Not necessarily: Diabetes is nearly unique among diseases in that an individual's outcome is mostly dependent on how motivated and disciplined they are about treating themselves. The patient does the fingersticks and watches the diet and does the exercise and takes the medicine. Or not. You can be your own best friend or your worst enemy. How long you live with diabetes depends on which of these you are.
