Can't: Stretch marks will fade over time so less noticeable, but still be present. Some people are born with a lot of elastic fibers in their skin which allow it to stretch and go back to normal without stretch marks. Others are not so lucky. Retinoid and laser may help.

May help: Our colleague dr. Westfried says, "bio oil can improve appearance of newer red stretch marks according to the manufacturer. It is cost effective compared to Mederma stretch mark cream. Expect a gradual improvement of no more than about 20 per cent." he also suggests that laser removal can help.

They fade over time: Pregnancy stretch marks, as well as stretch marks from body building or obesity, are lines where the second layer of skin (the dermis, under the surface) has cracked and separated. The stretch marks heal in that position, but their width narrows after the stretched skin area shrinks in size. The lines fade with time, but never go away completely. One can ask a dermatologist for an evaluation.

Vitamin E: Stretch marks are premanent, they may fade with time but they do not go away. Lotions with vitamin E will cause them to fade a bit quicker, but will not make them disappear.
