Depends: Joint pain can be from many causes. More history and information is needed. Obviously exercise or new activities can cause pain. But some illnesses and problems can do it too. Even the flu can start with joint pain, but usually all over. How many joints involved, whether swelling, stiffness or redness is there too, and so on can help figure out the problem.

OTC : I would probably start with otc meds of he has no contraindications. Follow up with doc if persistent.

Please tell us more: It is difficult to tell what he has without knowing where exactly the pain is; how it started or if trauma was involved. His type of work may provide clues as well. Is it his shoulders? Elbows (inside vs outside)? Wrists? Or joints of hands? If it is severe, i suggesting seeing his doc for eval. Good luck.
