Different Structures: Ear pain and changes in hearing are separate anatomically from dizziness and vertigo pain that responds to a little water/alcohol mix suggests the ear canal. A cold and dizziness can affect the middle ear by changing function of the eustacian tube (middle ear) and associated labyrinthitis (vestibular apparatus responsible in part for our balance) which is not part of the hearing mechanism.
