A member asked:

Intestinal spasms frequently lately. would a ct scan w/out contrast show problems? afraid of contrast due to several drug allergies.

Oral contrast: Having the ct scan with oral contrast will increase the ability to detect bowel pathology. Oral contrast is highly unlikely to cause a reaction. Iv contrast is helpful, but not absolutely necessary, especially if you are concerned about IV contrast allergies.

Maybe: Ct without contrast can show some problems, but it is much more sensitive with contrast. Oral contrast particularly helps with intestinal evaluation, but IV can also be of benefit. Definitely get evaluated by a doctor first to see if they think you would benefit from a scan at all. And perhaps consider discussing your allergy concerns with an allergist.
