Please Clarify: I do not know from your question if you are asking what causes fear in mental patients or what causes us to be afraid of mental patients. Fear is a subjective, individualize experience that is not easily defined in a few sentences. Fear and love are the two primary emotions upon which humans operate. Many mental heath conditions are the direct result of fear and the experiences caused by fear.

Fear of "mental" pts: If you mean why do people fear mental patients, there are all kinds of reasons -- mostly based in fear and ignorance. Mental illness has been stigmatized for generations. Seeing behavior which seems socially "odd" makes many people shy away, rather than try to understand. Also some mental illnesses people to their own need for help -- making it worse.
