Brown tongue: A brown colored tongue is usually a condition called black hairy tongue. It can be caused by smoking, poor oral hygiene a buildup of bacteria, dry mouth ( a lack of saliva), coffee and tea, and a fungal infection (oral thrush). Brush or use a tongue scraper on your tongue. If it doesn't get better, call your dentist, medical doctor or ENT specialist for an examination.

No: No. Brown tongue can come from either smoking or long term antibiotic use. Thrush or Candida Albicans is a white fuzzy patchlike area that when rubbed off leaves a reddish area. Consult your dentist or family physician to get a proper diagnosis.

Not really: In addition to dr hunt's excellent answer, if you have recently been on an antibiotic regimen consult with your dentist.
