Are you traveling?: Japanese encephalitis is endemic in se asia but not in north america. A vaccine is available and may be appropriate depending on your travel plans. See a travel clinic and take their advice as to prevention for this and other exotic infections.

Seek Advice: Most individuals risk for japanese encephalitis is exceedingly low. The incidence in tourists who travel to se asia is approximately 1/ million. Your chances are greatest if you stay in a rural area for a month (less time if extensive outdoor or nighttime activities) & are near rice paddies & pig farms. These last two are part of the virus life cycle-- pigs and wading birds- then consider vaccine.
