A member asked:

Please doctor, can you tell me if amitriptyline is like xanax (alprazolam)?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

NOT ALIKE: Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant for depression and some forms of anxiety, sometimes used for chronic pain or migraine. Xanax (alprazolam) is a triazolobenzodiazepine or a benzodiazepine with an extra triazole ring structure. It is quite addicting and has a short half-life. It is used for panic, with or without agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder and for anxiety associated with chemotherapy.
