Depends on things: And age of the child. A three year old is different from a sixteen year old. It also depends on your view of what's right and wrong. Can't get all that info from your post. Parenting is not easy.. It takes work, compassion, love, and yes, from time to time some compromise.

Varies: Kids go through different developmental stages. Its silly to negotiate with a kid in the "tooth fairy brain stage" since they don't have reasoning power. A short "i expect you to do this " instruction is preferable. By 7-9 most can be asked why they feel they must have or do x, basic reasoning is possible. By the teens, they can present a reasoned response.
