Weight loss: Topamax can cause weight loss but is not fda approve for such if used alone even on high doses. Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate) which is a combination of Phentermine and topamax(low dose for both) is approved for weightloss and maintenance.

How does topamax (topiramate) help you lose weight?

It's a side effect: It was not developed for weight loss. It's a side effect (or a few). Decreased appetite, nausea, unpleasant tastes, etc. So, they didn't study 'how' - I personally don't like using an anti-seizure, migraine prevention, anti-depressant drug for unrelated purposes - but I'm not a prescriber. Discuss the issue w/ your doctor. Best!
